I dont think posture is hereditary but I know a father & daughter who have the same poor posture, almost leaning forward…how can this be if it’s not inherited? From Anne in Carpentersville.

Hi Anne.

Well, your bone structure is inherited. This includes the muscle, tendon and ligament structure as well. These are structural items and are the reason you have similar characteristics to your parents. For that reason, the research is clear in that parents with bad spines have a very high likelihood of having children with problematic spines as well. So, is poor posture inherited…yes. Can poor posture become problematic on its own…yes. This is due to injuries that have not been treated properly. Therefore, the spine develops a dysfunctional pattern leading to more injuries and postural changes. Unfortunately, both lead to spinal degeneration if not treated properly. No, tylenol, motrin, aleve, or any other anti-inflammatory can make the situation better. In fact, they actually make problems worse in the long run due to increased scar tissue formation.
With over 17 years of experience, I have learned that comprehensive care including orthopedic testing, strength testing, motion testing, neurologic testing, coordination testing along with spinal testing can detect and then form a basis for treatment. With a fully functional rehab department and massage therapy, my patients get well fast and stay well longer even if they inherited some of their problems.
Remember, that even if inherited, we all have similar spinal structures so that I can formulate plans to prevent future problems so that you can stay healthy all of your life.
Sometimes people think that nothing can be done or that a traditional chiropractor was unsuccessful. I practice with a full rehab department including massage therapy. In fact, my adjustments don’t hurt because I have a very unique way of using a special tool to adjust. All of my patients love it and keep getting healthy pain free adjustments because of it.

I heard it again yesterday someone I know said they shrunk an inch…where does it go…does it mean that they are slumping over? From Mike in Crystal Lake.

Hi Mike.

Well I haven’t heard the word slumping in a while but that is part of the reason that people loose some of their height. However, standing up straight will not generally bring back all of the height lost because as the spine loses its stability, it begins to deform. That is the principle that I treat my patients with most often. So can chiropractic adjustment cure this phenomenon? The adjustments can help immensely but more is needed. This I the reason that I practice physiotherapy and rehabilitation for my patients. I want my patients to get better faster and stay better in the long rung without needing adjustments week after week. I do not subscribe to the same philosophy that most chiropractors do in that I want you to get adjusted the same way week after week to prevent future problems. There is a better way! This is what I do for my patients. In fact, my exams are based on medical necessity and follow orthopaedic principles. The reason is that I give treatment that addresses the actual problem with therapies designed to work together to reduce the problem and strengthen the area so that it doesn’t return. Don’t get me wrong, adjustments are a very powerful means to reduce a subluxation. However, I also treat spinal instability, pulled muscles, sprained joints, pinched nerves, sciatica, shoulder pain, ankle pain as well as hip and knee pain so more is required to treat these problems. Therefore, I provide a comprehensive means to bring back your height that will last. You can visit my web site for more info or just call for a free consultation.

Remember to walk tall.
