Step By Step Hormone Health & Weight Loss

Our hormones affect our health in many ways but one distinct way is – weight gain. Women with hormone imbalances can gain weight around their torso. Often their arms and legs are normal, and from the neck up they look awesome! Hormonally imbalanced men gain weight around their mid-sections and often are prone to develop pronounced breasts!

We know that Estrogen is produced in and increases fat cells. Simply put – the more Estrogen, the more cellular fat.

Here’s how to break the Estrogen cycle and then go on a weight management program:

Step One

Have your healthcare practitioner evaluate your hormones. You need to know the ratio of Estrogen to Progesterone currently in your body. If this ratio is out of balance, and you have  Estrogen dominance, then you will likely have or currently be gaining weight around your middle.
Step Two

Consult with your healthcare practitioner whether you can engage in a Detox Program to cleanse your whole system before you engage in any new or altered meal plans. A Detox Program is an excellent way to initiate normalization of hormones and enzymes in your body.

Step Three

Under the supervision of your Health Practitioner begin an Estrogen-lowering program. This will likely include  increasing your Progesterone levels with a natural treatment and / or therapy. Remember – hormone balancing was never all about Progesterone. Balancing Estrogens, if found to be out of balance to Progesterone, is equally important to your weight loss program.

A good Estrogen-lowering Program should include:

- Increase dietary fiber intake. This happens in two ways: 1.) Eat as much high fiber carbohydrates as you can by choosing fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 2.) You may need to add a fiber supplement (30 to 50 grams of fiber daily).

- Increase  indole dietary intake. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower contain indoles in your diet. This also happens two ways: 1.)Eat as much indole containing veggies as you can and 2.) supplement with an indole-3-carbinol supplement. (Target 3 servings a day).

- Increase  dietary essential fatty acid (EFA) intake. Theese are essential because the body does not make them. They help balance Prostaglandin production in the body and this in turn helps regulate Estrogens.

- Increase your overall nutrition by taking extra vitamin C and by taking a concentrated organic fruit and vegetable supplement.

Step Four

Eat 40/30/30. Incorporate a new way of approaching meals purposing to eat Carbohydrates Proteins and Fats in a balanced way at each meal. When we eat balanced meals our weight will normalize, our energy levels will increase and our hormones will be in balance.

Step Five

Get Moving. Develop a great exercise program with the help of a knowledgeable physical therapist or fitness instructor . Make sure the Program is tailored especially for you – one that you can do and are willing to make a commitment to keep.

Isabella, this is a great question.

I want to say first of all that adjustments cannot make you loose weight, BUT training and experience in functional medical physiology is the key to formulating a plan to loose weight in a healthy way. My training in the medical field as a Registered Nurse and that of Functional medicine in addition to being a Chiropractic Physician has given me the tools to formulate proper weight loss programs. In fact many of my patients have experienced significant body remodeling do to our programs. What I mean by body remodeling is that in order to loose fat and gain muscle, you MUST include the reasons why your body stores fats and doesn’t allow you to use those stores for energy.

We all know that just cutting calories will not yield proper healthy weight loss. Just the opposite, because when your body senses that there is a sudden drop in the energy intake, it will begin to DOWN SIZE. That may sound good at first but lets look closer into body down sizing.

First of all, the body needs a constant flow of energy to stay alive and healthy. If there is a significant drop in energy intake the body will start to make itself smaller and continue to store fat. So the organs (heart, muscles, kidneys, liver, lungs and etc) will begin to shrink. This is not a healthy state because of the stress placed on the body during this time frame. You are now susceptible to disease. Let me emphasize that your body continues to store fat and break down organs and tissues. Not a good thing! In addition, if you start to lower the fat intake in your diet as well as calorie restriction, your body actually will refrain from using fat stores for energy more completely! Just the opposite of what you hear on the TV or magazines and from official sources. Low fat diets don’t work period!

Secondly, it is hormones that dictate fat storage and energy utilization. So if your hormones are not in a balanced state, your body will not use fat for its primary fuel. In fact, if your hormones are not in balance, you are not healthy and susceptible to disease. You don’t hear anything about this problem on TV, magazines or official sources.

Thirdly, fat in and of itself, does not make your body store fat. You must have insulin secretion to store fat. Take type 1 diabetics, they have no insulin and have very little to no fat stores. But they are NOT healthy. In fact, their life expectancy is reduced. The truth is that carbohydrates, more specifically simple carbohydrates, make fat stores and triglycerides. This is due to the fact that insulin is secreted in response to carbs and the excess gets turned into triglycerides by the liver. In addition, bad fats contribute greatly to harmful reactions in the body. These fats are typically those that are processed. So basically, your body can store about a half of a bagel and the rest is turned into triglycerides by the liver. Again, you don’t hear anything about that on TV, magazines or official sources.

Fourth, your liver is the largest fat burning organ in the body. If it is not working properly for any reason, you simply will not be able to burn fat effectively. In addition, the liver is responsible for hormone metabolism so if problematic, hormones become out of balance and you will not be able to loose weight/fat. You don’t hear anything about this problem on TV, magazines or official sources.
Do you see a trend here? That right, the actual physiology of energy utilization in the body is not given in the popular media. Why you may ask? My opinion is that proper weight loss is a lifestyle change as well as a new understanding of your health. This would mean that you would no longer consume the products that the food industry or diet industry are selling. In fact, our government doesn’t seem to want us to know this information as well. The food pyramid and its next generation food spectrum don’t address any of the above facts of human physiology. Of course one must stay active, but tons of exercise will not overcome the above either!

Again, we have had many success stories when it comes to loosing weight properly. In other words…Body remodeling!
